Open cell materials contain pores that are connected to each other and form an interconnected network that is relatively soft. Open cell materials provide are effective as a sound barrier.

Closed cell foams don’t have interconnected pores. They usually have a higher compressive strength due to their structures.  Closed cell materials provide an effective air barrier and low moisture barrier permeability.   However, closed cell material is also denser, and as a result more expensive to produce.
